The Lingerie chronicles

lingerie

noun

women's underwear and nightclothes.

"Lingerie is not about seducing men; it's about embracing womanhood." – Dita Von Teese

A quick easy evolution of lingerie:

  1. Ancient Foundations: In ancient civilizations, women wore simple undergarments like loincloths or a basic woven cloth wrapped around their bodies for support and modesty.

  2. Middle Ages & Renaissance: Saw stiff and uncomfortable corsets and a more defined waistline. These were worn to achieve the ideal silhouette.

  3. 19th Century: Corsets became more structured with the invention of whalebone and steel supports, shaping the body into an hourglass figure. Chemise and Petticoats were popular and more comfortable silhouettes.

  4. 20th Century to Present: Lingerie has evolved significantly with the invention of the bra (brassiere) in the early 1900s. Over time, materials like lace, satin, and mesh are the base to introduce comfort, sensuality, and fashion in modern-day designs.

Isn't it fascinating how the most intimate pieces of our wardrobe can wield such power? Lingerie, often considered the foundation of any outfit, has the ability to make or break how we feel in our clothes.

A couple of decades ago, purchasing a bra was an experience. Over-the-counter-retail meant relying on the 'bhaiya' behind the counter to eyeball measurements and hand over a couple of pieces with the promise, "We will exchange." The experience was anything but empowering.

Today the landscape stands transformed. We now have functional systems of measurements, of trials, of technical help and of being spoilt by choices. The body has started responding to lingerie, just how lingerie responds to our bodies- the amount of cleavage, uplifters, minimizers and maximisers....you name it.

My personal observations are,

  • understand and respect innerwear,

  • take your time while shopping for your bras,

  • understand the item of clothing it has to team up with (closer cups give a pronounced cleavage for eg.),

  • understand when you are going to wear it (office bras mean 8 hours and more straight),

  • weigh the pros and cons of adventurous pieces (boning and shape lifters can be uncomfortable)

  • always try on a shirt or a blouse over the bra you are trying, because without any clothing, the neckline in a bra looks very different.

  • groom yourself before you go lingerie buying...this is a must - a lot of people try the same pieces. (shave underarms, use a deo, shower and never after the Gym),

  • and last but not the least, the back hooks have never heard of evolution! I mean how many of us hook up and turn the item of clothing around, sling the straps up.....?

What I love however is, "I have enough lingerie!"- said no one ever.
